The Power of More than One: Strategies for Collaboration in Literacy

This half-day workshop will involve participants in exploring a range of ways to structure co-teaching and increase collaboration among classroom teachers, reading specialists and special educators. Strategies to be discussed will include different models of planning and structuring co-teaching, ways to get started using the “lesson study” model, and formats for promoting coordination and communication among classroom teachers and those who provide supplemental or Tier 2/3 services for students in need of extra help. Participants will have an opportunity to practice using some of the tools provided and also to think about next steps that might be tried out. Gr. K-8 (This workshop is offered in partnership with the Southeast Learning Collaborative)

In addition to management, participants will be introduced to practical teaching and assessment approaches to enhance student’s thinking about the process and content of their writing. Reflection and discussion in the group will enhance learning and understanding to provide teachers with the tools they need to establish Reading Workshop in their classroom. This half-day session will provide participants with an overview of components of the Comprehensive Intervention Model developed by Linda Dorn at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Additionally, Pam will present aspects of the work that she and Marge Lipson are doing at Milton Elementary School as they develop an RtI model there. The presentation will include information about ways to think about a school improvement plan including: data walls, data team meetings, collaborative consultation, interventions, and guided reading plus. This session is appropriate for classroom teachers, special educators, literacy specialists and administrators, K-8. (This workshop is in partnership with the Southeast Vermont Learning Collaborative).

Writers’ Workshop II*

This session is a continuation of “Launching Writer’s Workshop,” which was presented at the VRI Summer Institute in August 2009 and again in Montpelier in October 2010. Participants are asked to bring their own writer’s notebooks as well as student work samples to share. On day one, we will follow up on work with the writer’s notebook—debriefing on participants’ efforts to implement writer’s notebooks, collaboratively troubleshooting about that implementation process and focusing on strategies for moving from the notebook to drafting to going public with finished pieces of writing. We will try out strategies for finding seed ideas in the notebook, developing / expanding those ideas, and drafting. We will explore the role/responsibilities of the teacher and students in each phase of this process. On day two, we will focus on revision and editing strategies. We’ll explore the research and practices on teaching students about the conventions of language so that their writing achieves its purpose and has the desired impact on their intended audience.

We will practice instructional techniques and models and clips of classrooms will be viewed to provide experiences to enhance existing Reading Workshops. In this 4 day workshop, classroom teachers (k-3), special educators, reading specialists, administrators, supervisors and other resource staff will deepen their understanding of the 5 essential components of reading in grades K-3: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Comprehension, Fluency, and Vocabulary. Over the course of the 4 days, participants will expand their repertoire of research-based instructional approaches to help students achieve Grade Level Expectations. The instructors will provide opportunities to practice several approaches with colleagues, and help teachers plan for classroom application.
