March 8
Michael W. Smith
The Elephant at the Party: Grammar and the Teaching of Writing
VRI at UVM, Montpelier
12:30-3:30

It’s rare for educational research to be absolutely unambiguous, but that’s the case when it comes to research on the effectiveness of teaching traditional school grammar (the labeling of parts of speech, parts of sentences, and so on). We know that it doesn’t help kids write better or more correctly. In this workshop, we’ll explore alternative approaches to teaching correctness, focusing especially how to teach what most needs to be taught in a way that kids will learn and remember.

Cost: $125 (FREE for LLI and VALLI Members)

Linda Dorn
Response to Intervention:
A Systemic and Comprehensive Design for Increasing Literacy Achievement***

Burlington, Doubletree
8:30-3:00

This session describes a comprehensive intervention model as a systemic RtI method. With professional learning at its core, the model integrates research on effective practices, alignment of classroom and supplemental programs, a portfolio of small group interventions for struggling readers, and a decision-making framework for selecting interventions and monitoring student progress. The RtI method will be illustrated by examples from schools, including planning tools, intervention frameworks, and videos of collaborative conferences and intervention team meetings. Linda Dorn is a Professor of Reading and Director of the Center for Literacy at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. She has presented keynote addresses and featured sessions at international, national, and state conferences. She has worked with state departments, universities, and school districts across the country on implementing comprehensive literacy programs. Writers’ Workshop II
VRI at UVM, Montpelier
8:30-3:00

This session is a continuation of “Launching Writer’s Workshop,” which was presented at the VRI Summer Institute in August 2009 and again in Montpelier in October 2010. Participants are asked to bring their own writer’s notebooks as well as student work samples to share. On day one, we will follow up on work with the writer’s notebook—debriefing on participants’ efforts to implement writer’s notebooks, collaboratively troubleshooting about that implementation process and focusing on strategies for moving from the notebook to drafting to going public with finished pieces of writing. We will try out strategies for finding seed ideas in the notebook, developing / expanding those ideas, and drafting. We will explore the role/responsibilities of the teacher and students in each phase of this process. On day two, we will focus on revision and editing strategies. We’ll explore the research and practices on teaching students about the conventions of language so that their writing achieves its purpose and has the desired impact on their intended audience.
